Centennial Celebration Mass
Sunday, April 26, 2015, 10:00am - 11:00am

St. Joseph’s Church to Celebrate 100 Years

Prior to 1915, the 2,500 Italian people residing in Oswego worshipped in the various churches scattered throughout Oswego, none of which were Italian.  Discussions began in January 1915 to establish a new Catholic church for the immigrants, and four months later, the Italians celebrated their first Mass on Easter Sunday in the newly-formed St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  Forward 100 years later, and the parishioners of St. Joseph’s Church, many of whom are direct descendants of the church’s founders, will be kicking off a Centennial Celebratory Year beginning April 26, 2015.

Celebratory Kickoff

The Centennial Celebratory Year will open with Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, located at 240 West First Street, Oswego, Sunday, April 26, at 11 a.m. celebrated by the Most Reverend Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse.  A luncheon will follow at Alexandria’s at Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center, East First Street, Oswego, at 1 p.m.  The public is invited to attend the Mass as well as the luncheon.  Tickets can be purchased by calling the rectory at 343-2160; tickets cost $10 each (free for children 12 and under) and must be purchased no later than April 6.  The meal includes a hot luncheon buffet and entrance to a small museum-like display of church memorabilia.

Anniversary Book

An all-inclusive Centennial Anniversary Book is being compiled to be published later this year.  It will include hundreds of newspaper articles dating back to 1915 that give life to the rich history of St. Joseph’s Church.  It will also include photos showing the old church, the current structure, stained-glass windows, statues, and relics as well as write-ups on various ministries and testimonials from long-standing parishioners.  In the end, it will be a fitting tribute for this momentous occasion, a keepsake to be enjoyed for years to come.  Since a limited number of copies will be published, reserve yours by sending $25 payable to St. Joseph’s Church to 178 West Second Street, Oswego.

Memorials/Dedications

A special section of the above-mentioned anniversary book will be reserved for memorials/dedications for loved ones.  Submit a photo, poem, or short story about a loved one along with payment (1/4 page = $50; ½ page = $100; 1 page = $200) to make a lasting tribute to someone who embraced their faith at St. Joseph’s Church.  For more information, contact Mary Helen Colloca at 343-8751.

Upcoming Events

Watch for other events coming up during this celebratory year especially the annual Festivale Italiano to be held this summer on Sunday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, which should prove to be another spectacular event!
