This film features the story of co-founder of Al-Anon, Lois Wilson, the wife of Bill Wilson, co-founder of the twelve step support program Alcoholics Anonymous. The Wilsons regularly hosted twelve step meetings in their home in the early years of A.A. The spouses, who tended to gather in the kitchen, found a common thread amongst themselves; they too were dramatically affected by the disease of alcoholism that was plaguing their loved ones.
In 1951, seventeen years after the start of A. A., Lois W. along with Anne B. started the official Al-Anon organization in support of family and friends affected by someone else's drinking. The organization grew and meetings are now held throughout Oswego County, Central New York, across the nation and around the world.
Al-Anon is a program of support for friends, families, co workers, neighbors and any others of those addicted to alcohol. As other addictions often accompany alcohol use, those whose friends and family members use other drugs are also encouraged to explore the benefits of Al-Anon. Like A.A. it is an anonymous program.
The movie was aired on the Hallmark Channel and CBS in 2010 and stars, Winona Ryder as Lois Wilson and Barry Pepper as Bill Wilson. Ryder was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie.
The public is invited to view the movie and enjoy light refreshments. Information will be available about the Al-Anon Family Groups program.
