A few years ago, a large collection of photographic negatives were donated to local antique dealer, Catherine Early. The photographs are of local residents taken between the 1950's and 1970's by Gentile Studios, a well-established photography business formerly on Bridge Street in Oswego. James Early, Catherine's husband, approached me with the negatives, hoping I could make them available to the public in some way. Soon after, I created "The Found Negative Project: Oswego," using Facebook as an interface to view the photographs and serve as a community exchange in this evolving local photographic history project.
Subjects include traditional studio portraits, weddings, other events particular to Oswego. The names, dates, and locations of the subjects were recorded on most of the individual envelopes containing the negatives and are posted alongside the photographs on Facebook, helping to identify the subjects and their locations.
Since founding The Found Negative Project a couple of years ago, photography interns at SUNY Oswego have assisted me in scanning the negatives and publicizing the collection on Facebook and through community exhibitions. Through their involvement, the students learn to appreciate and connect to the larger community of Oswego. The project continues to evolve into a rich local history as more photographs are added to Facebook and audiences contribute their stories.
