You as a Firefighter and Cancer
A presentation by Mahlon Irish Jr., retired Lieutenant City of Ithaca, NY Fire Department, New York State Fire Instructor, member and Past Chief Homer, NY Fire Department, and Prostate Cancer Survivor since 2014.
The first part of this program presents issues concerning current fire conditions in today’s environment, and how this affects our body’s in terms of contamination. It discusses the changes to us in the fire situations and the extra ability for us to absorb carcinogens into our systems. Also addressed are some simple changes to our normal activities and new technologies and practices to decontaminate and protect us, our fellow firefighters, and our families from unintentional contamination.
Part two expresses the personal experience and issues of being diagnosed, pre and post radical prostatectomy surgery, and the physical and mental changes of living with Prostate Cancer, as well as the financial impact. Some portions are very personal and explicit in terms of specifics of the procedures dealing with Prostate Cancer.
The program is approximately 2 hours in length and there is a comments and question time at the conclusion. If your department would like a copy of the presentation, comment below and we will have copies available after the presentation.
