The Oswego County 4-H Program hosted a winter adventure for local teens through its Teen Snowshoe Sparks Program.
This series, sponsored by the Oswego County Prevention Coalition, allowed participants to explore Oswego County while gaining essential outdoor skills in a fun and engaging environment. Throughout the program, teens learned first aid techniques, including how to be prepared for accidents. They were also educated on the importance of safety while enjoying winter activities and how to recreate responsibly in cold conditions. 4-H environmental educators provided demonstrations and guidance in the safe use of snowshoes, ensuring the teens were prepared for future outdoor adventures.
The goal was to provide teens with the knowledge and skills to enjoy the outdoors safely, while also promoting physical activity and healthy alternatives for a sustainable, drug-free community. The enthusiasm from the youth participants made this program a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
The program was held in three sessions, each focusing on different aspects of winter recreation, including navigating snowy terrain, understanding weather patterns, and practicing Leave No Trace principles in an outdoor environment. Sessions were held at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center in Williamstown, Selkirk Shores State Park in Pulaski, and Winona State Forest in Lacona.
