A dedicated activist for worldwide security for women, Shannon is the founder of both Run for Congo Women and Sister Somalia. These international campaigns have aided thousands of women and children worldwide that are living through violence and war.

First inspired by a report on "Oprah" about the war and violence against women taking place in Congo, Shannon left a successful company and began her activism efforts in 2005 with a lone 30-mile run that raised money and awareness of the plight of Congolese women. She has written essays, op-ed pieces and a pair of books: "A Thousand Sisters: My Journey into the Worst Place on Earth to Be a Woman" and, her most recent, "Mama Koko and the Hundred Gunmen."

Shannon currently is co-authoring another book, "Yes, You! Everywoman's Guide to Becoming a World Leader," delivering speeches and promoting the Campaign for a UN Convention on Violence Against Women.

Her first book described her visit to Congo, where she was able to help numerous women and form relationships with them that further inspired her cause. The book has served to motivate her audiences to help those who need it most.

Presentations by students, faculty and community members during the Global Awareness Conference Nov. 6 and 7 give those attending an opportunity to learn more about significant global issues and cultures. Hart Global Living and Learning Center, a unique residential-academic community at SUNY Oswego, sponsors the conference.

The first Global Awareness Conference was held in 2008 to honor the memory of the late international studies director, Don Michaels. The conference has continuously served to educate others about the cultures and traditions of international students attending SUNY Oswego.
