Jill Pippin, dean of extended learning, nominated Galvin for the award, which is bestowed by the SUNY system. "Ms. Galvin is the most organized, professional, attentive and effective secretary I have ever worked with," she wrote. "She anticipates and solves problems before I even think of them. She keeps herself informed at the division and college-wide levels to be able to ask intelligent questions and suggest thoughtful solutions."
Among Galvin's specific accomplishments, Pippin wrote, are taking on additional duties when staff is unavailable, including those of the high school programs coordinator -- an organizational task of 2,125 students in 111 sections -- on two occasions, and "by the time she turned it over to a full-time professional staff replacement, had significantly improved the program administratively."
Galvin also provides timely and accurate information about registration and advisement and myriad other requests, Pippin said.
Last summer, Extended Learning staff members moved to locations around campus to make way for renovation of the division's offices in Marano Campus Center. "Not only thinking of logistics, Angela organized a schedule of coffee hours that gathered Extended Learning staff . . . to keep morale high," Pippin noted.
Galvin has been building captain of Go Pink for the Cure, coordinated donations to the Newman Center's annual yard sale and managed collections for the division's "basket of caring" for the State Employees Federated Appeal/United Way drive.
Sherry Day, a secretary who reports to Galvin, noted her "exemplary customer service" to all, including those representing Extended Learning's varied constituencies: non-traditional students, veterans, English as a second language learners, faculty seeking help developing online courses or course components, online learners, high school teachers and students involved with college-level language courses, and summer and winter session faculty, staff and students.
"Angela Galvin has worked at SUNY Oswego for over 34 years," Day wrote. "In those 34 years, Angela has worked for several departments and has been a very reliable, dependable and well-respected employee at each and every one."
