For only the second time in the 24-year history of the Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super division at Oswego Speedway a driver swept both legs of a Twin feature bill, as recent Oswego High School graduate Anthony Losurdo quite literally schooled the field, driving away with each of the SBS Twin 20’s on Saturday night presented by Airgas and the Woodchuck Saloon.
Losurdo joins Dave Gruel as the only two drivers in Speedway history to accomplish the Twin feat, as Gruel won both 20-lappers back in his championship season of 2009, driving for Tim Barbeau.
Losurdo’s two victories give him three on the year, tying him with teammate Mike Bond for most victories scored so far in 2015. With five career victories overall, Losurdo is now tied with Gregg Davis, Rob Pullen, and Mark Castiglia on the all-time win list.
“I have to thank everyone that helps me on this racecar,” said Losurdo, in Turning Stone Resort Casino Victory Lane. “We have struggled with this car some this year, but it was perfect tonight. I just went for it, I could not have asked for a better racecar.”
Teammate Bond, Jason Simmons, Dave Cliff, and third team member Matt Magner chased Losurdo across the line in feature number one.
The second feature saw Kreig Heroth, Barry Kingsley, Russ Brown, and Bond trailing behind the Four Sevens Motorsports No. 1.
JJ Andrews led the very early portion of the first SBS Twin 20, before Losurdo came on strong at lap five to steal the lead.
Mike Bruce and Bond followed Losurdo to the point, making for a tight three car battle at the lead through the first half of the event.
With Bruce applying heavy pressure to Losurdo, the No. 22 would suddenly falter out of the fourth turn, nearly collecting third running Bond. The yellow lights would come on at that point as the Bruce No. 22 eventually stopped in the first corner.
With Bruce out of it Losurdo now led Bond, Simmons, Cliff, Magner, Andrews, Kreig Heroth, Dennis Rupert, Kingsley, and Jack Patrick.
As the green lights came back on it was all Losurdo and Bond out front over the course of the final six laps, with Bond making a final low side dive at the finish line, coming up short.
Losurdo would edge his hard charging teammate for the win at the line ahead of Simmons, Cliff, Magner, Andrews, Heroth, Kingsley, Patrick, and Andrew Schartner.
The second SBS Twin 20 saw Jeremy Pitcher and Rupert bring the field to green, but the race would not make one lap as several cars including Andrews, Bruce, Magner, and Patrick all tangled in the second corner.
Of that group, only Patrick would be able to continue at the restart.
Back to green Pitcher managed to lead one circuit before Losurdo, who started inside the second row, dove low on lap two to once again assume the race lead.
Losurdo immediately surged to a huge lead on the pack with Heroth beginning a charge in the No. 04.
Heroth soon moved to the runner-up spot, overtaking the Rupert No. 99, and immediately began to give chase to Losurdo.
Going green the rest of the way, Losurdo had his way with the pack driving to his second win of the evening ahead of a dueling top ten including Heroth, Kingsley, Brown, Bond, Schartner, Camden Proud, Rob Pullen, AJ Bernys, and Simmons.
Like Otto Sitterly in the Supermodified portion of the evening, SBS point leader Dalton Doyle also ran into issues.
While running stout in his heat race, something appeared to break on the Doyle No. 01, sending the machine hard into the outside turn one foam. Doyle was OK, but the car was done for the night.
As a result, Doyle would climb behind the wheel of the James Babcock No. 15, finishing 21st and 17th, to collect as many driver points as possible.
With Doyle’s issues, Bond now joins his Supermodified driving brother Bob Bond as unofficial point leaders heading to the Speedway’s Fall Championship 125 finale on Saturday, September 19.
Shell Shock Custom Helmet Paint Heat Race Challenge victories went to Pitcher, Bond, and Losurdo.
The D&S Landscaping Hard Chargers were Pullen and Brown.
Nice Price Auto Sales Up and Comers were Magner and Proud.
The White’s Car Care 4th Place finishers were Cliff and Brown.
Losurdo swept the Sherwood Racing Wheels Lap Leader Award while Bruce and Pitcher were Bacc-Off Hard Luck Award recipients.
