Frey's repertoire will include Benjamin Britten's "Cello Suite No. 2, op. 80," the second suite in his series of three cello compositions, as well as Leos Janacek's cello and piano arrangement "Pohadka," which means "Fairy Tale."

     Fascinated by the cello's origins, Frey's dynamic and personal performances take a firsthand approach to the creative process of music development. Using both period and modern instruments, her concerts recreate the impact these tools had on the establishment of classical music.

     SUNY Oswego music faculty member Rob Auler, Frey's host and piano accompanist for the Ke-Nekt concert, said he wanted to feature a cellist this year, and Montreal-based Frey has connections -- and admirers -- in Central New York.

     "Elinor and I have both worked with Neva Pilgrim of the Society for New Music, who has had a huge influence on classical music performance in the region," Auler said.

     Auler said Frey "has proven to be a great person and a fine cellist, performing concertos and making recordings."

     Last summer, her new CD, "La Voce del Violoncello," was released on the Belgian label Passacaille. At the 2013 Utrecht Early Music Festival Fringe, she took home the audience award for her performance of this hour-long album.

Juilliard training

     Frey has a master's degree in music from the Juilliard School, and a bachelor's of music from the Mannes College of Music. She has received the U.S.-Italy Fulbright Fellowship, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Canada Grant Scholarship and the Canada Council for the Arts grant, facilitating her work on Italian baroque and modern unaccompanied cello music. Pallade Musica, Frey's own quartet, won the grand prize for the 2012 Early Music America's Baroque Performance Competition.

     Her passion for chamber and classical music continues, as Frey also produces and programs a series of free concerts in downtown Montreal. That city's series is open to the public and highlights a specific musical era or instrument.
