The Oswego State men's tennis team opened its spring portion of the schedule with a 7-2 victory at Elmira College on Saturday afternoon. Oswego is now 2-1 on the year while the Soaring Eagles drop to 0-2.
On Saturday, the Lakers won every point except first singles and first doubles. In double competition, Chris Gayvert and Brian Emigholz paired for an 8-3 win in the second slot. Closing out doubles with an 8-2 triumph were the duo of Jimmy Terzian and Tyler Buxbaum.
For the singles circuit, all four of the previously mentioned athletes picked up another point for the Lakers, starting with Gayvert. The sophomore battled to a 6-3 first set before capturing second singles with a 6-2 second frame. Terzian – a senior – on both of his sets by a break, taking the first 6-4 before dodging a tiebreaker with a 7-5 second set.
Buxbaum – Terzian's senior classmate – was up next at fourth singles, winning easily and consistently, 6-1, 6-1. Emigholz started the spring of his junior year by nearly blanking has Elmira counterpart, 6-1, 6-0, at fifth singles. At the final singles spot, senior Dillon McDonald was in fact able to shutout his opponent, defeating Frank Endieveri III 6-0, 6-0.
The Lakers will now have a few weeks off before getting into the heart of their schedule, starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at Midtown Athletic Club against RIT in Rochester, N.Y.
