Didero entered three events and finished second in two of them.
Didero’s pair of runner up efforts with his John Colloca built ride sponsored by Corr-Pak and Tammy Ten Media first came by only inches to Otto Sitterly in August. Two weeks later, the same thing happened by another relatively close margin in the International Classic 200. The No. 3 car had lead several laps, and Doug was in position to win until about fifteen circuits to go.
“I guess after last season, it was nice to know we could at least still be competitive,” quipped Didero. “We had a couple of great runs and a solid Classic. That was the big goal after being away for eight years. It felt good. There are a lot of challenges to bringing a new car out, but we ran up near the front and I think we have a lot to build on for 2019. I’m looking forward to it.”
Remembered for his role in putting on some of Oswego’s best races through the 90’s, Didero needs absolutely no introduction to Supermodified fans. He has won nearly three dozen events including a pair of Classics. It's been a decade, but Doug wants to taste victory again.
“I just want to win this year, I really do,” Didero said. “We had a couple close ones last season and I enjoyed it, but victory lane is the huge goal. I’m looking to win a few races hopefully. That’s really what we are all working hard towards and I’m pretty excited for the opportunity.”
As of right now, it sounds like Didero will have at least five chances to gun for a win, but there could be more depending on which shows he decides to pick and choose from. He’ll start out with two separate opportunities in the Jim Shampine Memorial Twin 50’s on Saturday, May 25.
“We’re planning to do five or so races, which is good by me nowadays,” Didero explained. “We will be there for Opening Night, the Mr. Super show, of course Classic, and I guess probably all of the big ones. From there, we will just kind of pick and choose, but I will be up to race about once a month. I’m taking it a year at a time from here.”
Having just debuted a brand new car, fans were certainly curious as to whether or not Didero would return in 2019 due to the new rear wing rules implemented over the offseason. It sounds as if he is all for it. Doug’s team has been hard at work adjusting the car to fit these changes.
“I’m excited to see how we’ll stack up with the wing,” added Didero. “I think as long as the ISMA guys are somewhat willing to bolt a different wing on and come out and run Oswego, it is really good for the class. It is all about how it is accepted. It's going to be a big visual change for the cars, but maybe that was due. It has been a long time since we’ve seen that. I’ll be interested to see how it works and to get a feel for if the cars might drive any different or things like that.”
Rear wing, tail section, top wing, or indifferent, Doug Didero is one of the all-time greats. With a strong team of backers assembled that include Tammy Ten, Corr-Pak, Mike and Mary O’Brien, Pawn King, and John Costello & Associates, the 58 year-old from Dundas, Ontario is in great shape once again.
Couple this rejuvenated team of supporters with Didero’s driving and technical expertise along with Colloca’s impressive fabrication and attention to detail, and there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that a comeback trip to victory lane is rather probable.
