The BFA exhibitions will run April 7 to 15, April 21 to 29 and May 5 to 13 in order to fairly display the students' work in the second-floor space. Receptions for the student artists -- free and open to the public -- will take place, respectively, from 5 to 7 p.m. on the following Fridays: April 10, April 24 and May 8.

In another show, on Penfield Library's ground level, students in English and creative writing faculty member Laura Donnelly's "Advanced Poetry Writing" class will celebrate National Poetry Month in April by collaborating with Tyler Art Gallery's staff on an exhibition titled "Peter Paul Piech and Walt Whitman," April 2 to May 2 in the lobby and Lake Effect Cafe.

Piech, a printmaker who often combined linocut prints with poetry, donated a number of prints to Tyler Art Gallery in 1993. Donnelly's students each have selected a print incorporating a line from Whitman's poetry, and researched the poem in order to produce an informational label for each work. A free opening reception will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. April 17 in Lake Effect Cafe, and will feature readings of the poetry students' own work in response to Whitman and Piech.

Pre-Graduation Display

In the main gallery at Penfield, bachelor of fine arts degree candidates will culminate their years of study at the SUNY Oswego with a professionally mounted exhibition in a variety of media. Candidates for bachelor of arts degrees in art have the option of displaying their work on the library's first floor.

BFA candidates exhibiting April 7 to 15 include Katelyn Cardone, Taylor Clock, Kendi Kajogo, Chelsea Mahaffy, Nicholas Montesano, Devon Nitz, David Owens, Alexandra Peretin, Ashley Peretin, Allison Rhode, Lana Slinkard and Mary Taylor.

Candidates exhibiting April 21 to 29 include Quentin Bartholomew, Kristy Benicase, Jordan Farrell, Mackenzie Gillett, Mark Hanna, Andrew Jernigan, Kimberly Markell, Brigid Munafo, Tianna Powers, Allison Steel, Michael Wills and James Young.

Finally, candidates exhibiting May 5 to 13 include Kathryn Alonso-Bergevin, Samuel Castaldo, Chancery Daugherty, Alaina Dethier, Krysten Figueroa, Christopher Jankovski, Alexandra Leclerc, Alexander Lucarelli, Johaeli Payano, Sarah Rose, Morgann Smith, Brandon Wilcox and Suzanne Zajic.

Prints and Poetry

"Peter Paul Piech and Walt Whitman" will explore the visual power of Piech's linocut printmaking in synergy with the words of one of America's most important poets. Whitman expanded his life's work, "Leaves of Grass," from 12 poems to more than 400 over five decades, suggesting that art is never finished, it is always evolving.

Piech, born in Brooklyn to Ukrainian immigrant parents, owned a printing company, and he focused on releasing books of poetry with his illustrations along with them. He frequently worked in linocut, where a piece of linoleum, often mounted on a piece of wood for stability, is cut away so that the negative of the image is taken away and the desired image is raised for printing.

Students in Donnelly's poetry class include James Brooks, Jacqueline Blocker-Marshall, Molly Cappiello, Ryann Crofoot, Christine Czarnecky, Julian Daley, Linne Ebbrecht, Sarah Fessler, Americo Galindez, Anthony Gornic, Jessie Hambel, Taisha Laird, Alex Marchesi, Mareena Razik, Rebecca Rowback, Miranda Smith, Karleigh Stevens, Eric Tillotson and Yesenia Torres.
