Family, Friends to Sample SUNY Oswego Life Oct 23 - 25

The story of SUNY Oswego will unfold for students and their loved ones Oct. 23 to 25, as Family and Friends Weekend features athletics and theater, exhibitions and entertainment, tours and academic presentations, recreation and dining.

New for Family and Friends Weekend this year is the Academic Showcase, a series of five brief presentations about scholarly and creative projects from around campus.

Scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 24, in Marano Campus Center auditorium, the free presentations will include "Mapping Across Time: A Cartographic Experiment with the Mohawk River Valley and Fort Stanwix National Monument," "Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program," "BOUNCE Around the World! A Look at Childhood Obesity Here and Abroad," "A Study Abroad Experience in Air Quality Awareness" and "Digital Oz: A Showcase for SUNY Oswego's Best Students."

Athletics events will feature the return of ice hockey to the Marano Campus Center arena, with the women's team's free scrimmage against the North York Storm at 3 p.m. and the men's ticketed exhibition vs. Central Canadian Hockey League's all-graduate team at 7 p.m.

Putting a spotlight on the new Laker Turf Stadium, the men's soccer team will observe Senior Day as the Lakers take on SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m. Oct. 24. The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will take to Laker Hall pool against SUNY Oneonta at the same time.

The theater department will present "The Bacchae," an adaptation that updates Eurpides' greatest tragedy for the next generation, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24. Tickets are available at any SUNY Oswego box office, online at tickets.oswego.edu or by calling 315-312-2141.

Free shows

Other entertainment -- all free -- will include the movie "Pitch Perfect 2" at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 and 2 p.m. Oct. 25, in Marano Campus Center auditorium; a splash-in movie, "Monsters University," at 8 p.m. Oct. 23 in Lee Hall Pool; a concert featuring the College Choir, Chamber Singers, State Singers, College Orchestra and Concert Band at noon Oct. 24 in Sheldon Hall ballroom; a mini-carnival for children at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in Marano Campus Center's Swetman Gym; Ivan Pecel's "Making Juggling Tolerable" at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Oct. 24 in Marano Campus Center auditorium; open mic night at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 in Penfield Library's Lake Effect Cafe; and comedian John Crist at 8 p.m. Oct. 24 in Marano Campus Center auditorium.

Five planetarium shows -- free but ticketed through reservations at 315-312-3073 -- will take place in Shineman Center at 7 p.m. Oct. 23; 1, 2 and 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24; and 1 p.m. Oct. 25.

The free annual art exhibition for the college's art department faculty will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 23, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 in Tyler Art Gallery on the second floor of Penfield Library.

Recreational opportunities will abound, featuring the Jimmy Fund Pumpkin Run starting at 2 p.m. Oct. 24 with registration at 1 at the bus loop in front of Marano Campus Center. The annual SUNY Oswego Greek Council fundraiser for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will feature pumpkins decorated by sororities and fraternities near the end of the run.

Rice Creek Field Station will be open for tours from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 23 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 24, with a van shuttle departing every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 24 from the Marano Campus Center bus loop. The field station also will host a family-friendly, naturalist-led Rice Creek Ramble at 11 a.m. Oct. 24, though hikers are asked to call 315-312-6677 for trail conditions.

Other recreation will include open swims and open gyms at Lee Hall, as well as a 3-point shooting contest at 4 p.m. Oct. 23 at Lee Hall gym.
