"Elijah," one of the most highly regarded choral works of the 19th century, illuminates the life of the Old Testament prophet, according to Dr. Clay Price, SUNY Oswego's director of choral activities.
     "This oratorio is packed with drama," Price said. "Elijah was one of the major prophets of the Old Testament. Among the episodes we'll present in this oratorio are the resurrection of a dead youth, the bringing of rain to parched Israel through Elijah's prayers and the bodily ascension of Elijah on a fiery chariot into heaven."
     Price said, "Probably the most dramatic episode is the 'contest of the gods,' in which Jehovah consumes an offered sacrifice in a column of fire, after a failed sequence of frantic prayers by the prophets of the god Baal."
     Attendees are encouraged to donate a non-perishable food item for the Catholic Charities food pantry.
