A sample of mosquitoes recently collected in the north-central area of the town of Palermo has tested positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, the Oswego County Health Department reported today.

The Oswego County Health Department announced today that aerial spraying conducted Sunday, Aug. 16, was very effective in reducing the number of mosquitoes in the 10,000-acre target area in the towns of Hastings, West Monroe and Constantia near the north shore of Oneida Lake.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today that the Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) was detected in a sample of mosquitoes collected last week near the village of Central Square. Monitoring shows that although the Aug. 16 aerial spraying was very effective in reducing the number of mosquitoes near the north shore of Oneida Lake, the EEE virus is still present in the environment.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today that the Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) was detected in four mosquito samples in the Toad Harbor area. These samples were collected last week during routine testing conducted by the county and state health departments.
The Oswego County Health Department advises that, although the days are becoming shorter and the temperatures are beginning to dip, it is important to remember that mosquito-borne illnesses such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV) will continue to be a threat until the first hard frost of the season. Residents and visitors to Oswego County must continue to use personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites as they enjoy outdoor activities this fall.
The Oswego County Health Department is saddened to confirm that the individual who was hospitalized with Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) has died. The person was an adult resident of the town of Albion.
