On Friday, Oct . 2, OCO Literacy Volunteers will hold its 9th Annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble® Fest. One of Oswego County’s most entertaining fund raisers, Scr abble® Fest offers devotees of the game Scrabble® the opportunity to enjoy an evening of friendly competition, and more. “Scrabble® Fest is much more than just another fund raiser,” said Meg Henderson, coordinator of Oswego C ounty Opportunities’ (OCO) Literacy Volunteers Program.
“Scr abble® Fest is also a way to raise awareness of Literacy Volunteers and our efforts to combat the issue of illiteracy in Oswego County. Literacy Volun teers offers the opportunity for adult students to develop the literary ski lls and computer skills necessary for daily activities, gaining employment, and more,” explained Henderson.
Scrabble® Fest takes place from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Elks Lodge #271, 132 West 5th Street, Oswego. Doo rs open at 5:30 p.m. and games will begin at 6:30 p.m. Teams of four will c ompete against each other with the top three teams awarded prizes.
Back by popular demand for Scrabble® Fest 2015 are the “Golden Tiles ” which teams can purchase to help them earn additional points for their te am score. Teams will be able to purchase a limited number of ‘Golden Tiles’ which will play as a blank tile and can be used for the letter of their ch oice. “We will also be awarding an additional 100 points to the team who ob tains the highest pledge amount,” explained Henderson.
New f or 2015 are the “Exchange a Tile” Tokens. Teams can purchase up to one toke n per round of play. If you get a tray with all vowels, or you’re stuck wit h that pesky Q, you can turn in a token and dump and replace as many tiles as you like without losing your team’s turn at play. One token may be used per round of play.
In addition to the Scrabble® competition Henderson said that there will be raffles, door prizes, a 50/50 drawing and other fun activities to help support Literacy Volunteers.
E ntry fee for a team of 4 is $100 and includes light refreshments. The cost for individuals wishing to attend but not compete in the event is $15 (this fee includes light refreshments). All proceeds from Scrabble® Fest will be nefit OCO Literacy Volunteers. Operating under the auspices of OCO, Li teracy Volunteers provides confidential tutoring services at no cost to the student. Tutoring includes basic literacy (reading and writing), English l iteracy to improve English speaking, reading and writing skills, and some s imple math and computer skills. Volunteers have been providing Literacy tut oring in Oswego County for 50 years.
