Quilling or paper filigree is the art form of cutting and rolling narrow st rips of paper into coils of several sizes to create designs. Strips of pape r are curled, twisted and manipulated by fingers or tools. The process, whi ch dates back to at least the 13th Century, originated with religious order s who used the gilded edges of old manuscripts to decorate religious artifa cts. It is believed the paper was curled around the base of a quill (or fea ther), hence the name quilling. Today, this art form is resurging in popula rity with some modern day techniques and tools.
Guest artist, Audrey Scruton, a res ident of Oswego, NY and owner of Audrey Elizabeth Creations, began quilling in elementary school when she first created a flower magnet for her Grandm a. Repairing that magnet in February 2014 reignited her passion for the old art. Since then she has gone on to do craft shows, as well as teach classe s at the Oswego Public Library. In August 2015, Audrey became a member of t he North American Quilling Guild.
Registration for this workshop is $24, and attend ees will be provided all supplies and tools, which they will keep. Advance registration is required since seating is limited.
