arry, George and Bill Caruso, founders of Oswego Speedway, will be memorial
ized as East Albany Street west of Jim Shampine Drive is recognized as Caru
so Bros Blvd at a dedication ceremony on Saturday, June 30th at 4 PM. The d
edication will take place at the corner of East Albany St and Shampine Driv
e just across from the speedway.
The Caruso brothers built Oswego Spe
edway from an old horse track and opened the famed oval in August 1951 as a
1/3 mile dirt track. It was paved the following year and expanded to its p
resent 5/8 mile course in 1961. While under the guidance of the Caruso brot
hers, Oswego Speedway was acclaimed as one of the premier short tracks in t
he U.S. They nurtured the growth and popularity of the ultra-fast Supermodi
fieds by paying the largest weekly purse for a single division in the count
ry.
Additionally, they were the first to introduce modern innov
ations such as the electronic lap counter and scoreboard, they were at the
forefront of driver safety with innovations such as corner lights and corne
r flagmen in radio communication with each other and race officials, and th
e track was widely recognized has having the best concession stands of any
sports venue.
