DESCRIPTION: \n Auler to play works of Bach, Gershwin, colleague in Nov. 9 recital\n  \
n  \n Accomplished concert pianist Robert Auler of SUNY Oswego's music depa
rtment will present "Reinventions," a Focus on Faculty Series recital at 3
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, in Sheldon Hall ballroom.\n  \n  \n For each piece, Au
ler either will play a different version from the original or comment in ne
w ways on existing source material or inspiration.\n  \n Among the works, A
uler will perform three short Johann Sebastian Bach pieces that started lif
e as cantatas: "Sleepers Awake," "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "Jesu Joy of
Man's Desiring."\n  \n  \n The artist also will play a group of new composi
tions, the most notable a piece by new SUNY Oswego music faculty member Pau
l Leary titled "Perfume," based on the music of Nirvana and its late lead s
inger Kurt Kobain.\n  \n  \n "This is a stunning composition by my new coll
eague here at Oswego, Paul Leary -- and it's a great pleasure to bring this
to Oswego audiences," Auler said.  "We're so thrilled to have Paul on facu
lty."\n  \n  \n The final piece will be George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue
," Auler said, but with a twist -- it is Gershwin's adaptation for piano on
ly. "While the orchestra is not present here, nonetheless the work retains
 its impact," Auler explained.\n  \n  \n "It's a great opportunity to connec
t our campus with the community, and to bring a classical piano recital to
 our students," he said.\n  \n  \n The award-winning pianist maintains a nat
ional and international performing and recording career. He recently publis
hed the critically acclaimed CD "Shards" with composer Jonathan Pieslak. Au
ler has won numerous competitions, including the Society of American Musici
ans first prize. Following his success in the Young Keyboard Artists' Assoc
iation Piano Competition, Auler was invited to perform on a 15-city tour wi
th orchestra throughout Germany, France, the Netherlands and Denmark. He re
cently performed in China and South Africa.\n  \n  \n Tickets for "Reinvent
