William “Bill” G. Joyce, Jr., age 68, passed away suddenly on August 7, 2018.

Born November 24, 1949, in Oswego, NY to William and Nanette (Davies) Joyce, Bill graduated from Oswego Catholic High School in 1967 and attended SUNY Oswego.

Bill began his career of over 50 years in the trucking industry at an early age, working in many positions at Lake Shore Transportation Lines.

Through his participation in numerous state and national organizations, Bill became a highly respected executive in the trucking industry.

In 1992, he was awarded the Silver Spark Plug award, the highest honor given by the American Trucking Association’s Maintenance Council. He would go on to become the Chairman of the Maintenance Council in 1994. Bill also served as Chairman of the New York State Motor Truck Association from 1994 to 1996. In 1996 he was hired as the President of the Association, where he was employed until his retirement in 2008.

During his employment at the New York State Motor Truck Association, Bill formed Bestpass, Inc., a national provider of toll services for the trucking industry.

Bill served on numerous transportation related committees, taskforces and working groups and received many awards throughout his career. He was known as an expert in the field and was frequently asked to speak at industry events and conferences. Recognized for his expertise, he was appointed by then Governor Mario Cuomo, to be a permanent member of an advisory committee on truck weights.

Bill was known for his quick wit, sarcasm and sense of humor and often took joy in embarrassing his children. He loved trivia, opera, broadway musicals, travel and learning new technology, but most of all he loved his family.

Bill was predeceased by his wife of 19 years, Patricia (Taylor) Joyce.

He is survived by his father, William G. Joyce Sr. Son Andrew (Stephanie) Joyce of Sterling, NY and two step-daughters, Tara White of Ballston Lake, NY and Kendra (Todd) Hems of Mechanicville, NY and his siblings George (Christine) Joyce of Sterling, NY; Nannette Joyce of Sterling, NY; Cindy (Michael) Hagenmayer of Oswego, NY; John Joyce of Oswego, NY; and Mary Joyce of Sterling, NY, his six grandchildren Maya, Taylor, Vanessa, Grady, Fionn and Owen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be scheduled at the discretion of the family.
