The H. Lee White Maritime Museum will host a replica Viking long-ship, the Draken Harald Hårfagre, Sunday, Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ship will be docked at the north end of the West First Street pier in Oswego.
The Draken Harald Hårfagre is a Viking long-ship built in the Nordic style of over-lapping planks and is a reconstruction of the "great ships" that were referred to in Norse sagas.
The ship left her homeport in Haugesund, Norway in April 2016 and sailed across the North Atlantic with a mission to explore and relive one of the most mythological sea voyages – the first transatlantic crossing -- and the Viking discovery of the New World, more than a thousand years ago.
"Throughout our project we have striven to create intercultural meetings and inspire people to go beyond the horizon in a modern Viking saga," said Luke Snyder, expedition coordinator. "Along the traditional route, the ship has passed Viking settlements and new archaeological findings."
The Draken Harald Hårfagre will be open for tours from10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27 and 28. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for 5- to 18-year-olds. Admission is free for children under age five. In addition, the Maritime Museum, 1 W. First St. Pier, will offer reduced admission of $4.
"The captain and crew of the Draken Harald Hårfagre are very excited to bring the ship to the Port of Oswego," said Snyder. "Throughout our journey, we have been so fortunate to share our experiences and create new ones with all the wonderful communities we have visited throughout the Great Lakes. We are looking forward to meeting the people of Oswego, the surrounding areas of Lake Ontario and beyond.”
The museum will host a range of activities on the West First Street Pier during the weekend of Aug.26 through 28. On Friday and Saturday afternoons the museum offers boat tours to the Oswego Lighthouse. Tickets are $20 per person and space is limited. The trip is not recommended for children under five years of age.
In addition, Oswego Expeditions will offer kayak and bicycle rentals both days and the Oswego Dragon Boat Club will have information available for the public.
