Performing with the Oswego Jazz Project, a SUNY Oswego faculty combo, Douglas will show how he adapts and synthesizes unusual forms and diverse influences to create his own personal brand of improvised music.

"I've been a fan of his music for about 20 years," said Oswego faculty member Eric Schmitz, who will play host to Douglas. "He is really a very exciting musician. He's really very eclectic."

Though Douglas cites Igor Stravinsky, Stevie Wonder and John Coltrane among his musical influences, Schmitz said the jazz trumpeter, composer and educator creates his own music from disparate elements.

"He draws from different performers and groups, gathering the influences together to make music that's very much his own," Schmitz said. "Not too many musicians can do that and escape with their own identity."

Douglas operates his own record label, Greenleaf Music. His albums include "Time Travel," "Be Still" and the "Spark of Being" three-CD set. He has recorded with a number of groups, including his own Dave Douglas Quintet.

He has held several posts as an educator and impresario. From 2002 to 2012, he served as artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at The Banff Centre in Canada. Co-founder and director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, Douglas in 2013 began his second year as International Jazz Artist in Residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London and launched his own jazz workshop, dedicated to enriching the musical experiences of younger players.
