Just A Typical Summer Weekend In Oswego

A triathlon, the Oswego Regatta, and a reenactment at the fort all took place Saturday, June 18th. All of these events created a bustle of activity on the shores of Lake Ontario.

Rising early in the morning, athletes from all over prepared themselves to put their physical fitness and ability to the test. After five years the triathlon has expanded to include a duathlon and a 5k run. The event grows every year as participants bring their friends along and spread the word. One athlete noted that “...it’s nice that this event is early in the season. It makes it easier for more people to show up.” Some of the athletes came to Oswego from as far as Arizona and all ages were present. The youngest participant was three and the oldest was seventy-one years young. For the kids there was a small swim and a “Fun Run” where the kids ran different distances depending on their age at the SUNY Oswego swimming pool.

Right next-door to the Tri-Oswego triathlon was the 2016 17th Annual Hospice Regatta. Every year sailors come together and hoist their sails to race through the blue waters of the lake. On average, between fifteen to twenty different boats show up. Manning the sail boats are small crews of friends and family who had arrived days ahead of time in preparation for the race. Boaters belonged to both the Oswego Boat Club and clubs from other areas around Lake Ontario.

On the other side of the river, Fort Ontario hosted a reenactment of the French and Indian War Encampment. Outside the fort walls tents were lined up in neat rows, stew cooked over a fire, and some of the re-enactors were speaking French. The uniforms worn by the re-enactors were detailed and intricate; a testament to how seriously they take this event. It was certainly a sight to see. The mock battle took place later in the afternoon on Saturday in front of an audience of residents and visitors alike

From early in the morning to late in the afternoon, this mid-June Saturday was abuzz with activity. For people who wanted to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather there was no shortage of things to fill their time with.

These events demonstrate that Oswego is a community dedicated to enjoying summer and the amount of time it will put in to make amazing events like these a reality.
