Soprano Julia Broxholm, whose distinguished career extends from opera to Broadway, will appear as featured vocalist. Broxholm, associate professor of voice at the University of Kansas, will perform Barber's richly textured "Knoxville: Summer of 1915." Also featured are the lyrical "Hermit Songs" and "Summer Music" for woodwind quintet.

     Broxholm's operatic roles have included Alice Ford in Verdi's "Falstaff," Norina in Donzetti's "Don Pasquale" and Musetta in Puccini's "La Boheme." In musical theatre, Broxholm most recently has done "Follies" with some of the original Broadway cast members. She was a founding member of SATB, a vocal quartet that has included her host for the Ke-Nekt tribute, SUNY Oswego music faculty member Todd Graber.

     Graber said Broxholm and piano accompanist Russell Miller of the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music "have spent a lot of their careers championing the poetry and music of American composers."

     "They received a grant and commissioned a song cycle 'The Soul Fox' by esteemed American composer Lori Laitman with poetry by Colorado Poet Laureate David Mason," he said. "This cycle received its world premiere in Kansas last year and its New York premiere last Oct. 2, in Hatch Recital Hall at the Eastman School of Music."

Graber, whose preconcert talk is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., said Broxholm's venture with "The Soul Fox" is an outgrowth of her love for American poetry and music, "kindled by her exposure to and singing of Samuel Barber's music."

     "His expertise with vocal line, setting of lyrical poetry and ear for interesting timbres make for amazing songs," Graber said. "Julia has dedicated much of her career in singing the songs of Rorem, Hundley, Barber and Bernstein, as well as significant time spent performing great classical musical theatre songs by Weill, Berlin, Gershwin and Porter."

     Tickets for "Celebrating Samuel Barber, Featuring Julia Broxholm" are $15 ($5 for students) and are available at all SUNY Oswego box offices, online at tickets.oswego.edu and by calling 315-312-2141.
