The weather seemed to mirror the solemn occasion as law enforcement officers, survivors, and supporters came together for National Police Week 2025, their commitment to honoring the fallen undiminished by the elements.
The tradition, born from President John F. Kennedy's 1962 proclamation establishing May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, has grown from humble beginnings into a powerful testament to those who have given their lives in the line of duty. What started in 1982 as a modest gathering of 120 survivors and supporters in Senate Park has evolved into a nationally recognized event that draws participants from across the globe.
This year's commemoration holds particular significance for Oswego County, as we honor one of our own: Deputy Cailee Campbell, who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 25th, 2024, while responding to an emergency call. Her dedication to duty and unwavering commitment to protecting our community exemplifies the highest ideals of law enforcement service.
