Family members and Springside residents recently celebrated the achievements of two residents who reached the age of 100 years in September.

Their apartment doors were unexpectedly decorated by staff, and everyone gathered in the activity room for conversation and refreshments.

Mary Stone was born in Oswego and has lived here most of her life. She moved to Springside at Seneca Hill two years ago. She worked at Curtis Wright Aircraft in Buffalo in her early years and more recently worked 22 years in the office of the District Attorney of Oswego County.

When asked for her secret of longevity, Stone attributed it to enjoying life, finding beauty in nature, and appreciating the “glory of the whole thing.”

Thomas Putnam was born in Oswego to a family that owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store on the east side. He left Oswego College after one year to enlist in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater. He returned to SUNY Oswego in 1946 to earn his baccalaureate degree and later, after taking some courses at Hofstra and Syracuse, he earned the masters degree. He worked in public education as a teacher and administrator on Long Island. He later became an administrator and faculty member at SUNY Oswego until retirement.

Putnam has five children, nine grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. In retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively with their Airstream. He attributes his longevity to a modest lifestyle in the rural setting of the Oswego area.

Springside at Seneca Hill is an independent living residential community for seniors 55 or older who want to free themselves of the responsibilities of maintaining a house. Fully accessible apartments, duplexes, and cottages are available, along with a variety of services including prepared restaurant-style meals, housekeeping, laundry, lawn care, snow removal, garages, and maintenance services, depending upon the options chosen. Most residents find it considerably less expensive and much less work and stress than maintaining a private house.

Information is available and tours of Springside may be arranged by calling 315-343-5658 to schedule an appointment.
