Write a commentOswego County Opportunities and the Rural Migrant Ministry of Oswego County each received some much needed support this past holiday season thanks to the generosity of Exelon’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station.
Exelon presented Oswego County Opportunities with a check for $40,000 in support of the agency’s PATH, OPTIONS, and SAF programs, each of which provide vital services to teens and families throughout Oswego County.
A transitional living program for homeless young people ages 16 to 21; OCO’s PATH program teaches independent living skills, educational goals and life skills that will enhance these young people’s quality of life. OPTIONS focuses on assisting pregnant or parenting teens and their babies in accessing health care, education, job readiness, pediatric care and life skills.
OCO’s Services to Aid Families (SAF) provides much-needed services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and elder abuse. The program provides assistance and empowers survivors as well as community outreach to respond to these issues.
The funds for the donation were raised through Nine Mile Point’s annual golf tournament that raised more than $40,000. "The tournament would not be possible without support from our contractors and vendors, and of course our key sponsors for the event CB&I, Enercon, GE Hitachi, Hanes Supply Inc., Rombough Electric, Sargent & Lundy LLC and Structural Integrity Associates," said Pete Orphanos, site vice president. "We’re grateful for the opportunity to support these vital Oswego County human service organizations and help our neighbors in need.”
“We are thrilled and honored to receive this tremendous gift!” said OCO Executive Director Diane Cooper-Currier. “Exelon Generation’s donation will directly impact our community and make a huge difference in our ability to help teens and families that are in need.”
In addition to the donation to OCO, Exelon presented the Rural and Migrant Ministry of Oswego County with a grant of $3,000 to support its efforts in providing primary medical care to the rural poor. The Rural and Migrant Ministry is the only free medical clinic in Oswego County and provides 300-plus doctor visits per year for the patients it serves through its Open Hands Clinic. The organization’s medical staff consists entirely of volunteers.
