Ever wonder how nuclear power is generated or how a nuclear power plant works? If you attend Exelon Generation’s Community Information Night, you’ll find answers to these questions and many more. You will get a firsthand look at how the plants’ carbon-free energy powers more than two and a half million homes. The free event will be held at the Nine Mile Point Training Center on Tuesday, Aug. 21 from 4-7 p.m.
Station employees will be on hand to talk with visitors about nuclear energy, plant operations and current events in the industry. Visitors can also tour the Nine Mile Point control room simulator, which is used for training reactor operators.
This year’s event will feature live demonstrations of a virtual reality classroom and 3D printer as well as complimentary treats from Gannon’s Ice Cream. Members of the public may register online at https://bit.ly/2KZDxmV.
Community Information Night is an important part of Nine Mile Point and FitzPatrick’s annual outreach campaign, designed to engage and educate the public on plant operations. Throughout the year, employees from both stations are active in the community; volunteering, visiting area schools, speaking at community events and financially supporting dozens of civic and charitable organizations.
Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station is a dual-unit nuclear power facility located seven miles northeast of Oswego and 50 miles north of Syracuse. The station can produce more than 1,937 megawatts of carbon-free electricity – enough to power nearly two million homes. The 838-megawatt James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant generates carbon-free electricity for more than 800,000 homes and businesses.
