NOAA is establishing a new advisory council for Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary.

The council provides NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries with advice and recommendations on the management of the sanctuary. Council members also act as liaisons to their communities, building a strong connection between the sanctuary and stakeholders. This council replaces the pre-designation Lake Ontario Sanctuary Advisory Council.

The Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council will include 15 voting members and 15 alternates representing a variety of community interests. The advisory council will also include 10 government agencies that serve in a non-voting capacity.

The sanctuary is seeking applicants for the following seats:

  • Citizen-at-Large: 2 Seats
  • Business, Marketing and Economic Development: 2 Seats
  • Divers, Dive Clubs and Archaeology: 2 Seats
  • Education (K-12): 1 Seat
  • Higher Education: 1 Seat
  • Fishing: 1 Seat
  • History, Maritime Heritage and Public Interpretation: 2 Seats
  • Recreation: 1 Seat
  • Research, Science and Technology (1 seat)
  • Tourism: 2 Seats
  • Youth (non voting): 2 Seats

Council members are appointed for a term of two or three years. Applicants do not necessarily need prior first-hand experience within the sanctuary, but they should be very familiar with their constituents' regional interests and how they relate to, or benefit, the management of Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. Anyone with the desire and ability to effectively represent their respective community’s interest in the management of the sanctuary is encouraged to apply, regardless of the applicant's geographic location within the region.

The application deadline is Sept. 17, 2024. Applications not received or postmarked by this date will not be considered.
