The Oswego High School varsity football team gave Carthage a battle Friday night, Sept. 20, at Joe Wilber Field, but in the end came up on the short end of a 27-14 count.
The Bucs took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter as quarterback Garrett Dunsmoor hit Justin Canale, who weaved his way through the defense to hit paydirt.
The Bucs played well, but Carthage scored three second quarter touchdowns on an 11-yard run by Bailey Wilkinson, a 14-yard run by Rodrick Groce and then what could have been a back breaker as Josh Yelvington ran back a punt from 76 yards away for a 21-6 halftime lead.
Oswego appeared to be able to play with Carthage, but turnovers and some miscues hampered the effort in the first half.
However, in the third quarter Ryan Lavner connected with Canale from five yards out and a two-point run by Zach Crisafulli put the score at 21-14 entering the fourth quarter.
Oswego simply could not mount the game-tying effort and in the final 12 minutes the lone touchdown was a 53-yard pass from to Yelvington from Wilkinson.
Oswego came up short as the Bucs have proven to be quite competitive in the last two games.
This Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28, the team squares off with Fulton for a 2 p.m. homecoming kick off as the full day of the parade, followed by BucFest and the football game will make for an exciting Saturday.
