Oswego Opera Theater is pleased to present la serva padrona (The Maid Turned Mistress), an opera buffs by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) in a livestream performance this coming Saturday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m.

Free tickets can be reserved at https://oswegooperatheater.com/la-serva-padrona--2021/.

Directed by artistic director, Juan Francisco LaManna, the production features three talented singers, alll vocal students at SUNY Oswego - Salvatore Sperrazza as Uberto (A wealthy bachelor), Angel V. Tyler as Serpina (Uberto’s saucy maidservant), and Alaces J. Sarmiento as Scapin (a servant of Uberto). When Serpina is comfortable enough in her duties to shirk some of them, she tells Uberto she will get back to work only if he will marry her. In desperation, Uberto orders Scapin to find him a wife. But through an elaborate scheme between Serpina and Scapin, the two trick Uberto into marrying Serpina, whom he claims he has loved alll along. The opera will be accompanied by a chamber ensemble consisting of two violins (Kathryn Lardeo and Emily Baker); viola (Sophia Moon),;and cello (Vienna McCall).

La serva padrona, composed in 1733 as an intermezzo (the two comic acts performed between the acts of one of Pergolesi’s serious operas), was popular in its own day in Italy. But it reached new prominence nearly 20 years later when performed in Paris, sparking the Querelle des Bouffons (quarrel of the comic actors), a lively controversy by intellectuals on the relative merits of the Italian versus the French styles of opera.

The beautiful music and comic plot will be enjoyed by all.
