The Speedway’s 64th season of racing will once again kick start with ‘Opening Week,’ featuring two separate opening weekends on May 3 and May 10.
The ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries will return to the Speedway on Saturday, May 3 to begin the year with the second annual ‘Irish’ Jack Murphy Memorial 56-lap event. The ISMA Supermodifieds will be accompanied by the Pathfinder Bank SBS for the opening round of their 2014 championship stretch. ISMA’s early May trip to the Speedway will mark the first of four events at the ‘Steel Palace’ in 2014.
As in 2013, an open practice session will be held at the Speedway on Friday, May 2 for ISMA Supermodifieds, Novelis Supermodifieds, and Pathfinder Bank SBS.
‘Opening Week’ continues the following weekend on Saturday, May 10 with the 53rd annual Oswego ‘Super Kick-Off’. The event will serve as the opener for the Oswego Speedway Novelis Supermodified ‘Road to the Championship’ with the return to a 50-lap Supermodified main to start the season.
The Oswego ‘Super Kick-Off’ will also honor mothers as a part of Mother’s Day Weekend with ‘Bring Mom to the Races.’ All moms entering the Speedway by 6pm will receive a free carnation.
The month of May at the Speedway will once again be highlighted with the annual Memorial Day Weekend special on May 24 featuring the Richie Evans Memorial 75 for the Race of Champions Modifieds, the Jim Shampine Memorial 75 for the Novelis Supermodifieds, and the Tony White Memorial 35 for the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series.
The May racing calendar will conclude on May 31 with the running of the Spring Championship for both the Novelis Supermodifieds and the Pathfinder Bank SBS. A staple at the Speedway for several seasons, the Spring Championship will return in 2014 with a 50-lap Supermodified main and a 30-lap SBS feature event.
The month of June will see just three weekends of racing, but they will no doubt be action packed.
The ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries returns for a 50-lap main on June 7 with the SBS, and the first of two Speedway autograph nights is scheduled the following weekend on June 14 for the Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS.
June 14 will also recognize Dads on Father’s Day Weekend with ‘Bring Dad to the Races.’ All dads at the Speedway on June 14 will receive a free hot dog combo meal.
The racing on June 21 will be highlighted with the awaited return of the historic Supermodified Twin 35’s.
Since the Speedway’s inception in 1951, Twin events have been common place at the ‘Steel Palace’.
Starting in 1970 with Twin 50-lappers, both won by Jim Shampine, the Speedway ran some form of Twin main events (some because of race cancellations the previous week) each year following with the exception of 1999, 2006-2007, and 2012.
Over those years the Twin 35 format became the distance of choice from 1976-1998. During those years five different drivers picked up their first career Supermodified main event wins including Brian Herb, Mike McLaughlin, Dean Hoag, Howard Page, and Greg Furlong.
Since then another five drivers have also earned first career wins in Twin races of different formats with the likes of Otto Sitterly, Jeff Holbrook, Gary Morton, Jerry Curran, and Pat Lavery all reaching victory lane.
One change to the Twin 35 format this season will be the introduction of half-points being awarded to the entire feature field in each main event. Each Twin 35 winner will receive a total of 50 points for his or her victory, instead of the usual 100.
The 2014 edition of the Supermodified Twin 35’s will be joined by a 30-lap Pathfinder Bank SBS main.
As always, July will be a blockbuster month of action at the Speedway.
Grand Prix Night at the Speedway returns on 4th of July Weekend with extra distance ‘Road to the Championship’ events for Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS in conjunction with the return of the popular ‘Christmas in July’ event from 2013. Another amazing fireworks display will cap off the evening on July 5.
The King of Wings has become one of the more popular open-wheel, asphalt racing events on the racing calendar, and it will return for its sixth installment on July 12 along with the annual Oswego Speedway Old Timer’s Reunion. The event will mark the third round of the ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries at the Speedway and will again take to the card with an extra distance ‘Road to the Championship’ main event for the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series.
With the move of Race of Champions Weekend back to the month of September, the Mid-Summer Championship will make its return to the Speedway on Saturday, July 19. A 50-lap Novelis Supermodified feature and a 30-lap Pathfinder Bank SBS main will crown Mid-Summer champions at the Speedway one week before the Speedway’s annual off-weekend during Oswego’s Harborfest.
The month of August features three pivotal events along the ‘Road to the Championship’ for both the Supermodified and SBS divisions, including the lucrative $10,000 to win Mr. Novelis Supermodified and $1,500 to win Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS title events on August 2.
Several championship points will be gained or lost on August 2, August 9, and August 16 as the championship road will again finish with the Fall Championship, this year run in unison with Race of Champions Weekend September 11-13.
Oswego Speedway’s track championships will now join Race of Champions Weekend, making for an even larger three nights of action following Budweiser International Classic weekend two weeks prior.
Budweiser International Classic Weekend will look much the same next season as it did in 2013. Classic Week events will kick-off on August 27 and run straight through August 31 with the running of the 58th annual Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds.
The Race of Champions Asphalt Modifieds will return to ‘Fast Friday’ night action and will be joined by Novelis Supermodified ‘Fast 14’ time trials along with time trials and heat races for the Bud Light SBS Classic.
Bud Light ‘Super Saturday’ Classic Weekend events will feature the final round of the ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries with the annual running of the Bud Light ISMA SuperNationals 60 along with the Bud Light SBS Classic 75 and the Bud Light TQ Midget Classic.
Other special events on the 2014 Oswego Speedway racing calendar include Spring Spruce Up Day on April 19 along with the yearly open test session on April 26.
Driver autograph sessions are slated for June 14 and August 9.
The Rusty Wallace Racing Experience will return to the Speedway a total of ten times during the weekends of May 17, July 26, August 23, and September 6.
Fast Friday test sessions will also be a weekly happening in 2014 with session’s running from 4:30-8:30pm. The Oswego Speedway Tiki-Bar will again be open for each and every Fast Friday this coming season.
