The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a division of SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, will hold an informational hour on Falls Prevention at Volney Town Hall, located at 1445 Co. Rt. 6 on Tuesday, January 19, at 10:00am.

The one hour session will be conducted by Rachel Brooks, “Six Steps to Better Balance” Instructor and “Osteo Bone Builders” Master Trainer. Registration for the informational class and/or six-week sessions can be made by calling RSVP at 312-2317. The class will be offered free of charge through the Oswego County Falls Prevention Coalition; an initiative spearheaded by Oswego County Opportunities Rural Health Network

One week following the informational session, the six-week course will begin on January 26 and continue every Tuesday thereafter, from 10:00am – 11:30am through March 1. The course will cover how to help prevent falls and reduce injuries if a fall occurs. Participants will learn activities that are fun to do, such as the ’10 Martini Slump’ and which are designed to reduce, not only falls, but the fear of falling.

The Six Step approach to Better Balance was developed by Betty Perkins-Carpenter, PhD, of Senior Fitness Productions. Dr. Betty is a nationally renowned expert on falls prevention who has made improving balance easy and effective for everyone. With falls the leading cause of death in people age 65 and over, RSVP as a member of the Falls Prevention Coalition, is taking the lead on reducing this statistic for Oswego County.

RSVP is part of a nation-wide network of Senior Corps programs, sponsored by the Corporation for National & Community Service and is sponsored locally by SUNY Oswego and the United Way. Other initiatives offered through RSVP in partnership with the non-profit sector include the AARP Tax Aide and Driver Safety Programs, Camp Hollis Senior Camping and Busy Knitters; Driving Books Home and OCO Home Delivered Meals, to name a few.
