SLELO PRISM Provides Tips for End-of-the-Summer Invasive Species Management

The St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM) is providing tips for community members to engage in invasive species management as the seasons begin to change.

Two species to keep an eye out for are the invasive jumping worm (Amynthas spp.) and the longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis). SLELO PRISM's latest blog outlines steps to take toward identifying and managing these species through their Pledge To Protect outreach initiative.

Community members can learn more about taking the Pledge to Protect with SLELO PRISM at Fort Drum's Outdoor Adventure Day Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. SLELO PRISM will have an exhibit and an engaging invasive species game the whole family can play! The event is free and open to all ages, offering a perfect opportunity to learn about the great outdoors.

SLELO PRISM also recommends several tools that are used to aid in invasive species management efforts. For boaters, the NYSDEC ArcGIS web application offers an interactive map to explore environmental and conservation data across New York State, including boat launches and decontamination stations. Trail blazers and forest lovers can use Seek and iNaturalist to identify and document biodiversity, aiding conservation efforts. Gardeners benefit from the National Wildlife Federation's Native Plant Finder, which recommends native plants to support local wildlife. Urban dwellers can engage with the SLELO PRISM Urban Forest Sustainability initiative to enhance urban forests through resources and community involvement, promoting healthier, more resilient communities.
