The Syracuse World Refugee Day Planning Committee is excited to announce the events for the 2025 Annual World Refugee Day celebration, taking place on June 20th and 28th, 2025.
These events will bring together refugees, immigrants, and the broader Syracuse community to celebrate the contributions, resilience, and achievements of the New American communities in Syracuse and beyond. Our theme this year is Community as a Superpower, and speaks to the strength we build when institutions, organizations, and neighbors come together in solidarity.
World Refugee Day, established by the United Nations, has been celebrated globally for over a decade and is a momentous occasion for Syracuse to honor the diversity and strength that refugees bring to our community. This year’s celebration promises success, with two key events:
Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall
Date: June 20, 2025 Time: 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Location: City Hall Front Steps, Syracuse, NY
The celebration will kick off at the front steps of Syracuse City Hall. Once gathered, attendees will participate in the official flag raising ceremony, followed by remarks from key community leaders. This event marks the beginning of a weekend-long celebration of the refugee and immigrant community in Syracuse.
World Refugee Day Festival at Grant Middle School
Date: June 28, 2025 Time: 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM Location: Grant Middle School
On June 28, join the community at Grant Middle School for the World Refugee Day Festival. The event will feature exciting fun activities and cultural performances. Attendees will also enjoy delicious food from local vendors and explore more than two dozen resource booths.

World Refugee Day in Syracuse has been a long-standing tradition for over a decade, bringing together the New American communities to celebrate their contributions to Central New York. The event fosters greater understanding, strengthens connections, and provides opportunities for meaningful dialogue and engagement. World Refugee Day is made possible with the help of volunteers, corporate sponsors, and the New American Forum. The festival is also made possible by the Syracuse Cultural Festivals Fund from the City of Syracuse and the Syracuse Common Council.
