Write a commentThe Hook: Songwriters Concert Series continues to grow in popularity. The Oswego Music Hall is proud to offer up the talents of three critically acclaimed songwriters to finish up the Spring Season. Taryn Suprenant, Gary Frenay and Mike McKay will host the Friday, May 12, 2017 event.
The Hook is a concert series highlighting songwriters in a unique format, bringing the power of three individually talented artists into one space. Their talent and energy will grace the Music Hall stage located at the McCrobie Building, 41 Lake Street, Oswego. Doors open at 7:00 for the 7:30 event.
Taryn Surprenant is a singer-songwriter from the mountains of upstate NY. She creates a style of folk that incorporates alternative, blues-infused undertones beneath carefully crafted narrative. Paired with strong vocals that flow in effortless waves over minimalistic guitar progressions, her lyrics speak to the beauty found within the caverns and chasms of human experience and emotion. Gary Frenay is an internationally-recognized singer/songwriter and the lead singer and co-founder of the seminal Syracuse, NY-based power pop bands, The Flashcubes and Screen Test. A six-time SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music) Award winner, Frenay was the first musician ever inducted into the Syracuse Music Hall of Fame twice; as a solo artist in 2006, and again as a member of The Flashcubes in 2014. Frenay’s musical career began in the late 70’s as co-founder of the Flashcubes who toured throughout the northeast and opened shows for the Police, Joe Jackson, The Romantics, Pat Benetar and The Ramones. Gary began performing as a solo acoustic act in 1991, gaining the respect of the music industry and sharing the stage with such nationally known artists as Catie Curtis, Pete & Maura Kennedy, Ani DiFranco and Tony Trishka. He has also opened shows for Steven Stills, Don McLean, Aztec Two-Step and David Bromberg. Frenay made national television on the “Jenny Jones Show” as a finalist in a nationwide talent search. Over 150 radio stations across the country have played his music. Gary has also performed extensively with band-mate and duo partner, Arty Lenin. A singer/songwriter from Syracuse, NY, Mike McKay is a musician that will not be ignored. He began writing and performing music in the summer of 2008 to local venues, and quickly became addicted to the high of playing to bigger and bigger crowds. His passion for the music he creates runs deep and true and within minutes of him playing you quickly become drawn into the power and intensity that he brings with him to the stage. Mike has played music in nearly all of the lower 48 states, as well as internationally on several occasions. He toured full time from 2012-2015, fronting his own 6 piece band and living in a bus. A vocal injury in late 2014 eventually sidelined his days of performing and writing full time, and these days he owns and operates a small business, and performs every Sunday in his living room-turned-performance space at his house in Baldwinsville, where he lives with his wife, Kaylin. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to enjoy the performance of these incredible performers at the all-volunteer family friendly Music Hall venue .The venue is the McCrobie Civic Center, 41 Lake Street, Oswego. The atmosphere is intimate with candle-lit tables surrounding a small stage. Desserts, snacks, popcorn and beverages are available for purchase. We are also excited to be partnering with local brewer “The Cellar Door” to provide craft beer and NY State wine during the performances.

The Music Hall has been run entirely by volunteers from its inception over 39 years ago. Volunteers can earn admission to shows through different tasks. Music Hall concerts are made possible in part with funding by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
