Write a commentThe ‘Steel Palace’ officially roared to life with the first day of Budweiser Classic Week testing on Monday as Tim Devendorf, Dalton Doyle, and Lou LeVea Jr. all took to the fast 5/8 mile for their first laps of the week in preparation for the richest and most prestigious Supermodified event in the world, the Budweiser International Classic 200 on Sunday, September 6.
The team cars of Devendorf and Doyle were the fastest in the four hour session, which ran from 4-8 p.m.
Devendorf, driving the newer car in his stable as No. 5, ran several laps, cranking off a best time of 17.0 seconds. Currently sitting 12th in the Speedway’s driver standings, Devendorf has shown tremendous speed in his new ride and will no doubt be a threat for a ‘Fast 14’ position come ‘Fast Friday’ as a part of Corr/Pak Merchandising pole day time trials.
Devendorf timed in 24th fastest in last year’s International Classic time trials driving the machine that Doyle piloted on Monday.
In his first ever laps in a Supermodified Monday, Doyle worked his way up to speed and broke into the 17-second bracket with a lap of 17.7 seconds in the Devendorf No. 54.
Doyle is one of six International Classic rookies currently slated to attempt to make the Budweiser International Classic 200’s 34-car field this weekend including Aric Iosue, Mike McVetta, Logan Rayvals, Kevin Jaycox, and Kreig Heroth.
Weekly warrior LeVea Jr. brought his No. 83 out on track Monday, and like Doyle, used the day to work his car up to speed in preparation for the weekend. LeVea, who is 17th in driver points this season, ended his testing with a best lap of 17.9 seconds.
Budweiser Classic Week testing continues on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. with the Supermodifieds of Bob Magner and Heroth slated to take laps as well as the Small Block Supers of Mark Castiglia and Matt Magner.
