’Tis The Season To Prepare Our Pets For The Holidays

As we venture off to run our errands in local stores, we no doubt take note of holiday decorations beginning to appear. It seems everyone is preparing for one holiday or another. In no time, we will be in the middle of the busy holiday season, visiting with family & friends, both at home and away.

Is your family dog or puppy prepared? Social media will soon be abuzz with tips for the holidays to keep your family pet safe. Each holiday brings its own hazards to be weary of; chocolates at Halloween, turkey bones at Thanksgiving, toxic plants and trees decorated with ornaments and lighting during Christmas. The simple act of opening a door to dispense candy or to welcome guests into our homes put our pets at risk. Likewise, over zealous pets put our guests at risk with their jumping and getting under foot as guests enter our homes.

A little thoughtful planning and training could reduce these risks substantially. Taking the time now while things are quiet to teach your dog or puppy new skills will pay huge dividends later.
There’s plenty of time to teach a few skills before the holidays are upon us. Training can reduce or eliminate frustration, embarrassment or heartache later.

Here’s a list of skills every pet should have:

• Waiting at the door (Reduces door dashing or escaping)
• Sitting or lying down to greet guests
• Going to its Place (mat or bed)
• Resting quietly in a crate
• Coming when called

Happy Training!
