The art department at SUNY Oswego will offer "At the Art Studio," a workshop series for children and young adults, Dec. 28 to 30 in art department facilities on campus.

First offered on Saturdays this fall, "At the Art Studio" is based on the premise that artistic expression empowers practitioners to take action, to do things, build things, make mistakes, explore and search for answers. The program came about when adults in the community asked about more opportunities for their children.

Classes will take place mornings and afternoons, and families may mix and match days and sessions. Advance registration is recommended, as space is limited.

For information and for a registration form, visit www.attheartstudio.org or call the SUNY Oswego art department at 315-312-2111. Families in need may apply for a financial scholarship or payment plan.

This fall, 30 students participated in the inaugural program, launched with the assistance of a grant from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation. Forming three groups by age, these young artists engaged in series of projects that were presented in an exhibition on the last day of the session. As part of the program, students explored, inquired and investigated various materials and methods used in creating visual artworks. They also explored the use of themes and engaged in interpretation with an emphasis on the individuality of expression.

Instructors in the program come from the department's pool of faculty members as well as graduate students in the SUNY Oswego master's degree program in art teaching. Sessions are designed through consultation with senior faculty in the art department and the School of Education.

With programs running in the fall, winter and spring, the At the Art Studio workshop series is meant to complement existing opportunities in the community. The primary goal of the series is to provide young artists with the skills and resources necessary to focus on their creative process.

There will be an At the Art Studio program in the spring, running 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays from March 5 to April 16 (no class on March 26). Registration is open for that session as well.
