Americans are Stranded in the Middle East

Americans have been given a shifting list of explanations from administration officials about why our citizens stranded in the Middle East cannot be guaranteed safe passage home.

We’ve heard that events “unfolded too quickly,” that intelligence was “in flux,” that regional partners were “unable to assist,” and that evacuation routes were “not viable.” Each explanation seems to change depending on the day and the speaker.

But the most troubling moment came when President Trump was asked directly why the United States could not ensure the safety of Americans trapped in an escalating conflict. His answer did not offer clarity or reassurance. In her most recent article, Heather Cox Richardson reported he said:

“Well, because it happened all very quickly, we thought, and I thought maybe more so than most, I could ask Marco, but I thought we were going to have a situation where we were going to be attacked. They were getting ready to attack Israel. They were getting ready to attack others. You’re seeing that right now. And a lot of those missiles that are hitting in those are stationary. Those were aimed there for a long period of time at these other countries. So, I think I was right about that. We attacked first, and if we didn’t, it could have been, you know, look, we’re really decimating them. They’re being decimated. And if we didn’t. If we didn’t, and by the way, we have massive amounts of ammunition. We have the high end. A lot of it was given away stupidly by Biden, very stupidly, for free. And I’m all for Ukraine, but they gave away a lot..”

This response jumped from predictions of imminent attacks, to claims about pre-positioned missiles, to boasting about offensive strikes, to grievances about ammunition stockpiles. What it did not do was answer the question: Why can’t the United States guarantee the safety of its own citizens in the Middle East?

Compounding the frustration, several Republican Senators blocked efforts to invoke a war powers resolution, one of the few mechanisms Congress has to demand transparency and accountability when American lives are at risk. At a moment when clarity are essential, political obstruction has taken precedence over responsibility.

The result is a widespread and understandable sentiment: this ain’t right. Americans deserve more than shifting explanations and evasive answers. They deserve a clear plan, honest communication, and a President who treats the safety of its citizens as a non-negotiable priority.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for it!
