The appearance is part of a national tour that began in Santa Barbara last year and ends with performances at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in western Massachusetts this summer.
     During a three-day residency, the choreographer and company members also will perform a lecture/demonstration at Oswego High School. That visit is part of an innovative literacy project developed by SUNY Oswego's Artswego, the college's School of Education and Oswego City Schools that helps students draw connections between verbal language and visual expressions such as dance.
     Called "visually arresting" by Roslyn Sulcas of the New York Times, Brooks' choreography explores time, space and energy in fresh and engaging ways. The name "Moving Company" was chosen deliberately to encompass the expansive range of movement his dancers employ.
     "What may appear to be random motion is finely calculated. Again and again, his dancers erase the whiteboard and write new vocabulary for Brian's creative process," said SUNY Oswego dance instructor and choreographer Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell.
     "I'm fascinated by his use of the human body as scaffolding," Wilkins-Mitchell said.
In "Big City," Brooks' newest work, dancers move across the stage using the sequentially extended limbs of their partners as a kind of moving walkway. At other times, standing figures rise up dramatically on the torsos of others.
     The Brian Brooks Moving Company will perform four pieces during the evening, a presentation of the Artswego Performing Arts Series. In addition to "Big City," the program includes "Descent" (2011), "Motor" (2010) and "I'm Going to Explode" (2007).

     Parking is included in the cost of the ticket, and available in Lot 6, in front of Culkin Hall, or Lot 18, the southern end of the large parking area behind Hart and Funnelle residence halls.
