The Oswego State softball team (0-2) opened its season with a pair of losses to RIT, which was playing its 11th and 12th games of the season, Friday, March 15, at the National Training Complex.
The Engineers (8-4) came out on top in the first game, 3-1, and followed up with an 8-4 win.
Tori Hunt put RPI on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run, but junior Dee Apps (Camillus, N.Y.) tied the game in Oswego State's next at-bat when she hit a lead-off homerun.
The Engineers had five straight batters get on base resulting in a pair of runs for the home team on the scoreboard to go ahead, 3-1, at the end of three innings.
Oswego State tried to mount a rally in the top half of the seventh when Alexandra McKay (Fr., Fairport, N.Y.) had a pinch hit single to start off the frame and Laura Kahn (Jr., Cohocton, N.Y.) followed up with a walk. After a strikeout, Katie Bredin (Jr., Oneonta, N.Y.) worked another walk to load the bases with two outs. However, the rally came up short as the next two Lakers struck out and popped out to third base.
Oswego State managed just five hits in game one, while RPI had six hits. Sarah Thayer (Sr., Winthrop, N.Y.) suffered the loss after giving up two earned runs in 4.1 innings of relief work. She added four strikeouts and two walks to her stat line. Engineer Kristina Weltzin tossed a complete game after striking out 11 and walking three.
In the second game of the twinbill, RPI plated two runs in the top of the first and never looked back as it added four more runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead. The Engineers tacked on another run in the third before Oswego State registered two runs in the bottom of the fourth after a Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) double scored McKay and Sue Schoff (Sr., Little Falls, N.Y.) to make the score 7-2.
Sammie Schroeter (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.), who recorded two hits, scored in the fifth after an error, but RPI added another run in the sixth. Before the game was over, Bredin drove home Trovato to make the final score 8-4.
Thayer took the loss after pitching 6.1 relief innings as three of her six allowed runs were unearned following five Laker errors. Charlene Osmanski picked up the win for RPI after scattering seven hits over four innings and allowing two earned runs.
Oswego State will play Keene State at 9 a.m. and Ramapo at 11 a.m. in a schedule change.
