February is National Children's Dental Health Month, and kindergarten students at Riley Elementary recently welcomed Chris Kearns of Associated Dental Arts to come in and share information that promotes dental care and healthy habits.
Kearns, a local dental hygienist, traditionally spends the month of February visiting local area schools giving dental presentations. Kearns and the other hygienists at Associated Dental Arts have been giving office tours and dental presentations for several years. This year Kearns talked to over 300 pre-K-3rd graders about the importance of good dental hygiene.
At the presentations Kearns brings a variety of tools and objects used in a dental office at a routine checkup, and then discusses the importance of keeping their teeth clean, as well as demonstrating proper brushing techniques and flossing. She also talks about good nutrition and how that plays an important role in keeping your teeth for a lifetime.
At the end of her presentation she shows the children a custom fitted mouth guard and explains the importance in wearing proper safety equipment while playing sports. She also provides each child with a new toothbrush, dental floss, as well as a few fun dental related items.
