John Joseph “Ches” Chesare, 86, a life-long resident of Oswego, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023.

John was born and raised in Oswego. He was the son of the late Joseph and Eva (Rice) Chesare.

He was a veteran of the US Army, serving from 1955-1958.

For over 30 years, John was employed at the US Post Office in Oswego. He also worked as a custodian in the Oswego Middle School, where the students looked up to him.

When “Ches” wasn’t working, you could find him at his children’s sporting events, coaching local sports teams, playing racquetball, or tending to his garden.

He had a great love for kid’s sports, and coached many local soccer, baseball, basketball, football, and Special Olympics teams. “Ches” was also a member of the Oswego Elk’s Club, the D.A. Lodge, and the Buccaneer Boosters Club.

On top of all that, he was a travel soccer coach for the D.A. sponsored team, and the girls’ varsity soccer coach at Bishop Cunningham High School.

John is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Barbara (Main) Chesare of Oswego; his loving children, Colleen Palumbo of California, Theresa (Gary) Galletta of Weedsport, and Angela (Daniel) Makitka of Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Tracy Burns Mowry.

He also leaves behind many grandchildren that loved him dearly, and several great-grandchildren.

In following Ches’ wishes, there will be no calling hours. Instead, there will be a Celebration of Life from 1:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Vona’s Restaurant in Oswego.

In lieu of flowers, donations and memorial contributions can be made to Camp Hollis; or to Oswego youth sports programs. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.daincullinan.com.

Arrangements are in the care of the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
