Oswego State's Alpha Sigma Chi sorority is keeping busy within the Oswego community. The local sorority is assisting the community with fundraising events as well as participating with other fraternities and sororities at local events such as walks and fundraisers.

Recently, the sorority managed to get together and set up a fundraiser for the families of victims who suffered during the Boston bombing incident. The president of Alpha Sigma Chi (ASA) Vanessa Reyes stated how it is still significant to help out even outside of our community. According to Reyes, the girls have grown and learned to realize their role as a sorority and member of Oswego to assist with community involvement.

"So far, (this semester) we've been involved in several things," Reyes explained. "We've done events such as The Relay For Life and March Of Dimes. We've also worked with foundations that collect old and used jeans and donate them to teenage girls in need throughout the community."

Reyes said the sorority has worked alongside other sororities and fraternities this year at events like The Relay For Life and the Lake Clean Up. ASA is always known for supporting other fraternities and sororities by going to their fundraising or community service events, according to Reyes.

"I think it is extremely important for sororities to get involved with what's going on in the community. It allows us to become closer with the community and help those who we can't physically help. Having sororities on campus working together will allow us to unite as one and provide greater support," Reyes continued. "Also, by having more than one sorority supporting great causes like this one, will attract more people to participate and support these causes."

Alpha Sigma Chi, along with other sororities and fraternities at SUNY Oswego, continue to help out the community in any way they can.

"Not only is having more sororities beneficial for attracting people to participate in community events, but it will allow also get the word out faster and spread throughout the college," Reyes added.
