More than 80 volunteers were honored Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the H. Lee White Marine Museum's Annual Volunteer Reception for all of their time and support in 2012.
Captain Lance Knapp and First Engineer Don Smith of the National Historic Landmark World War II LT-5 tug crew were selected as the museum's 2012 Volunteers of the Year. They have both dedicated 21 years of volunteer service; maintaining, restoring and operating the historic LT-5.
Their commitment to this national treasure was recognized by proclamations from both Mayor Tom Gillen and Oswego County Charman Fred Beardsley. In addition, Mark Pechkham, acting director for the NYS Bureau of Historic Sites, came from Albany to personally recognize all the volunteers for their efforts to preserve maritime history, for their support of the museum and to acknowledge Knapp and Smith's tremendous efforts.
Jonathan Daniels, director of the Port of Oswego Authority, also thanked Knapp and Smith for their time and expertise. The LT-5 is owned by the Port Authority but is operated and maintained by the H. Lee White Marine Museum.
"It has been a pleasure and an honor to work alongside Lance and Don these many years," said Mercedes Niess, executive director of the museum. "They have preserved a piece of America's history for the next generation. They are not only leaders, but also just great guys. We thank them for their great work. We are fortunate to have such a high calibur of volunteerism at the Marine Museum."
More than 2,500 volunteer hours were logged at the museum in 2012.
