It is with deep love and sorrow that the family of Marlene Joyce Johnson (Mills) announces her passing at the age of 84 on September 27, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY.
Marlene was born and raised in Phoenix, NY, and later made her home in Oswego, NY. A devoted Catholic, her faith guided every step of her life. She was deeply committed to her family and community and cherished her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of many years, George “Taggy” Johnson (age 87 in 2024), her daughter Christine Elizabeth Johnson (age 17 in 1978), her infant son, Paul; and brothers Dick & Bob Mills.
Marlene is survived by her brother Gary Mills (wife, Carol), her loving sons, Michael Johnson (wife, Lisa) and Stephen Johnson. She was the proud grandmother of Christine Kivlen (husband, Chris), Joseph Johnson (wife, Kara), Nicole Lazos (husband, Jaime), and Mark Johnson. She found immense joy in her great-grandchildren fondly known as her “pumpkin pies” - Payton and Kate Kivlen and Jayleen, Maya, Isla, and Alma Lazos.
Her legacy is one of steadfast faith, devotion to family, and quiet strength. She had a way of knowing everyone and everything, proving that a little curiosity and a big heart can make a community feel like family. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her devotion to prayer, and the love she extended to all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Mary’s Church, on Saturday, October 18th, at 11am; burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of her life at Canale’s at 1pm. There are no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
