May’s full moon will be on Friday, May 5th, and the Amboy 4-HEEC will be watching! At 7:00 p.m., join the environmental educator for a Full Moon Hike, where participants will enjoy a guided hike through the Center's woods after learning about May's full moon - the Flower Moon. Discover why it's referenced as the Flower Moon or Full Moon in Bloom, the history behind the name, and explore the rest of the full moons and their special names for the year. Then, the group will discuss eclipses and different phases of the moon. While the moon is predicted to be "full" at 1:34 p.m., it is expected we will be able to see it bright in the evening as well. Please bring a headlamp or flashlight!
The weekend after on Saturday, May 13th at 10:00 a.m., get ready to ‘bug out’ with the environmental educator. Buggin’ Out will be an interactive program where the group will learn about insect lifecycles and the role they play in our environment. Some are native, some are invasive, but they all play a part in our ecosystem AND have special characteristics that make them different from other species. After learning about some NYS insects, the group will head outside to catch and release insects along the trails and get an up-close view of these characteristics and adaptations. By the end of the program, participants will be able to answer “What's that bug?!” next time they have one in their home!
These programs are designed for nature lovers of all ages; anyone from individuals to families are encouraged to attend! All youth must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program. The fee for these programs is only $4 per person, or $12 for a family. Children under the age of three are free! Preregistration is requested.
