During Tuesday night’s Common Council meeting in Fulton, 1st Ward Councilor Mark Woodworth’s resignation was officially accepted.
Mayor Jim Rice then outlined the process for both a mayoral appointment and the process to get on the ballot for the November special election triggered by the resignation.
The councilor position is open to residents of Fulton’s 1st Ward, which covers a portion of the west side of the city running from Fulton city limits on the north to parts of Kellogg and Leitch Street in the south (map here); it is bounded on the east side by the Oswego River and on the west side by the border with the Town of Granby.
Letters of interest in applying for a mayoral appointment are due to the mayor’s office by Tuesday, May 26, with a preferred deadline of Friday, May 22. This will allow time for the appointee to be chosen and then for the appointment to be placed on the agenda for the June 2nd Common Council meeting. The appointee will be placed in the position until a special election may be held in November.
Nominating petitions to get on the ballot as an independent require 30 signatures; nominating petitions for the major parties (Democrat and Republican) have already closed ahead of the June 23 primary. However, the parties may opt to appoint someone to run on the ballot under their party line. The special election for the open position will then take place on the first Tuesday of November.
