Nina B. Caruso, 94, a lifelong resident of Oswego peacefully passed away on May 9 in her Bishops Commons apartment.

Born in Oswego, she was the daughter of Murphy and Mary (Piazza) Tremack. Nina was a graduate of Oswego High School. She then went on to earn her degree as a registered nurse at the Newark City Hospital in New Jersey studying tirelessly to become valedictorian of her nursing
class. Education was of primary importance to Nina. She was an avid reader throughout her life and she dedicated herself to make certain that her sons and her grandchildren had all the necessary resources to obtain a college education.

Nina was a devoted wife and loving mother. She married George Caruso, Sr. in 1945 and chose to be a full time mother over her RN career. Raising three sons, she instilled in them the same independence, strength, compassion and enthusiasm for learning that she demonstrated throughout her life. She was tolerant, but could be a disciplinarian when she had to be, and on occasion she certainly wasn't afraid to express her unfiltered opinion.

Nina loved to cook for her family with her signature dishes being breaded veal cutlets with peppers and onions and her father's cheese dressing recipe. After her children were grown, she got the travel bug and particularly enjoyed her trips to Hawaii, Italy and other countries in Europe with her grandchild and nieces. Most recently she cherished the time she was able to spend with her new great grandson.

Nina was a communicant of St. Paul's church and a life member of the American Italian Historical Association Calandra Italian American Institute.

Surviving are her sons, George Caruso, Jr., Douglas (Barbara) Caruso and Romey (Karen) Caruso, all of Oswego; grandchildren, Tiffany Caruso, David Caruso, Aryelle Caruso and Cameron Caruso; great grandson, Jax Caruso and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Caruso, Sr. in 2008, her sister Eleanor Boyzuick, in 2015, and her brother David Tremack in 2003.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, 10:30 AM at St. Paul's Church . There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are in care of Dowdle Funeral Home.
